Unrivaled in scope and impact, the annual Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences is the convergence of over 70 scholarly associations, each holding their annual conference under one umbrella. Now in its 88th year, this flagship event is much more than Canada’s largest gathering of scholars. Congress brings together academics, researchers, policy-makers, and practitioners to share findings, refine ideas, and build partnerships that will help shape the Canada of tomorrow.

The joint conference of the Canadian Association for the History of Nursing and the Canadian Society for the History of Medicine will be part of the congress, from June 1st – 3rd.

A special program to commemorate 100 years of university nursing education in Canada and the UBC School of Nursing’s Centenary and is included on June 3.

Come and hear about the history of Vancouver General Hospital’s “hidden gem”. Obscured by later additions, many have forgotten that the once magnificent Heather Pavilion is even there.  Donald Luxton, Heritage Consultant, Historian and Author of Vancouver General Hospital, 100 Years of Care and Service will tell the story of one of Vancouver’s first major institutions and architectural landmarks.

Parking is available on McRae Avenue and The Crescent.  Disabled parking is available on site

    1. The Vera Roberts Endowment, which funds research and publication on the history of outpost nursing in Canada with priority to the Canadian circumpolar regions (north of 60 degrees parallel).

    A New Grant:

    New Bjoring Center Grant for Historical Research on Nurse Practitioners
    The Eleanor Crowder Bjoring Center for Nursing Historical Inquiry (ECBCNHI) is announcing the Advance Practice History Research Scholar Award. The goal of this research award is to disseminate scholarship regarding advance practice nursing to an international audience. By strengthening relationships and collaborations to increase access to historical scholarship, the ECBCNHI hopes to advance historical scholarship to practitioners.  A donor has made a gift of $5,000. This will be a one-time award with the potential for continuation. The due date is June 1, 2019 with the intention of the recipient using the award the following academic year.

QANE : Quality Advancement in Nursing Education Inviting Articles to be submitted.

This special issue seeks contributions on the history of nursing education, on pedagogy and curriculum that focus on the history of nursing and healthcare, and on the history of accreditation of nursing schools. We welcome submissions related to the history of nursing education that examine a wide range of curricula foci, such as mental health, public health, advanced practice, and home care, or the historical analysis of all aspects of professional education, including undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education, as well as leadership in nursing education. We also encourage submissions on the history of nursing education and pedagogy from a global perspective and invite papers from all regions and jurisdictions.

Submission Deadline : April 30, 2020

Publication : September 2020

UBC 2018 BSN Orientation

On August 30, 2018, the UBC School of Nursing welcomed approximately 120 incoming BSN students. The History of Nursing Group has been invited to be part of the orientation program, first by Glennis Zilm, and recently by Cheryl Entwistle and Sheila Zerr. The History Group members dress in costume to present the group’s objectives and programs and encourage the students to become interested and involved with the history of nursing.  This year two students became members following the presentation. Nurse to Remember

Little has been known of Canadian War hero, Mona Parson, a nurse trained in US, but from Nova Scotia. We all should remember her this Remembrance Day.  Click on the link below to watch the youtube video that tells her story.

Website Award Presentation

Ron Hyde, from the BC Historical Federation presented Anita Petersen and Lenore Radom with their BC Best Website Award Sunday, Sept 16th at our TEA & TALES event.  The Award consisted of a certificate each and $250.00 to BCHNS.  Lenore then presented Anita Petersen, our amazing Webmaster with a $250.00 cheque for her creating of the website and her strong support of the website Committee, Beth Fitzpatrick, Jennifer Stephens & Lenore Radom. They are a team which consistently strives to be a “work in progress”.

We wish to sincerely thank Nan Martin for nominating us to the BCHF and Francis Mansbridge, our part time Archivist,  for his very supporting letter.

September 16, 2018 successful Tea & Tales event

The Tea & Tales event Sunday September 16th, at Hycroft mansion, featuring 3 authors, was another successful event enjoyed by all 31 who attended.  Authors, Carol Harrison from Terrace, Sonya Grypma & Lisa Smith both from Lower Mainland gave very informative background of their well researched books. Guests were royally served a delicious “Afternoon Tea” by Sheridee Lee Catering & her team!
