Two Nurses from “the past” addressed the incoming class of nursing students. Cheryl Entwistle & Sheila Zerr dressed in costume to share traditions of nursing and “what it means to be a nurse”. Cheryl & Sheila are teachers at heart and enjoyed their time with the students, and they even attracted some Dental Students to share with.
UBC GALA a smashing success
The UBC Centenary Gala, May 2 2019 at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver was a smashing success!! In celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the School of Nursing, 100 nurses were featured, who have over the years have made nursing proud. Dr Elizabeth Saewyc, Director of the School of Nursing gave the delightful award presentations and closing remarks. BCHNS members were well represented in this evening event and several received awards.

Donald Luxton, Heritage Consultant, Historian and Author of Vancouver General Hospital, 100 Years of Care and Service will tell the story of one of Vancouver’s first major institutions and architectural landmarks.

A New Grant:
New Bjoring Center Grant for Historical Research on Nurse Practitioners
The Eleanor Crowder Bjoring Center for Nursing Historical Inquiry (ECBCNHI) is announcing the Advance Practice History Research Scholar Award. The goal of this research award is to disseminate scholarship regarding advance practice nursing to an international audience. By strengthening relationships and collaborations to increase access to historical scholarship, the ECBCNHI hopes to advance historical scholarship to practitioners. A donor has made a gift of $5,000. This will be a one-time award with the potential for continuation. The due date is June 1, 2019 with the intention of the recipient using the award the following academic year.

This special issue seeks contributions on the history of nursing education, on pedagogy and curriculum that focus on the history of nursing and healthcare, and on the history of accreditation of nursing schools. We welcome submissions related to the history of nursing education that examine a wide range of curricula foci, such as mental health, public health, advanced practice, and home care, or the historical analysis of all aspects of professional education, including undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education, as well as leadership in nursing education. We also encourage submissions on the history of nursing education and pedagogy from a global perspective and invite papers from all regions and jurisdictions.

UBC 2018 BSN Orientation
On August 30, 2018, the UBC School of Nursing welcomed approximately 120 incoming BSN students. The History of Nursing Group has been invited to be part of the orientation program, first by Glennis Zilm, and recently by Cheryl Entwistle and Sheila Zerr. The History Group members dress in costume to present the group’s objectives and programs and encourage the students to become interested and involved with the history of nursing. This year two students became members following the presentation.
